Finding a Tattoo Design with YOU in Mind

Getting a tattoo becomes a permanent part of who you are---and will be---in the future.

Getting a tattoo is not the same as getting a piercing and you should take the time to consider:

1. Tattoos are PERMANENT.
2. Tattoos can be expensive to remove.
3. Tattoos take time and care to heal.
4. A tattoo may not say who you are 20 years from now.

This is why people take months or even years to contemplate what type of tattoo design they want before getting inked. The next steps are finding the right tattoo design, figuring out where you want the tattoo to go on your body, and locating the tattoo artist that will do a good job.

1. Become a Member of a Tattoo Forum

Before you do anything else, become a member (free) of an online tattoo forum. By far, this is the best way to find tattoo designs, tattoo artists, and tattoo answers to questions.

Searching for tattoo designs online using Google is NOT the way to go.

A tattoo is very personal. Think about it: do you want the same tattoo design everyone else is running around with?

Stay away from ‘cookie cutter’ designs and flash tattoo designs hanging in tattoo parlours except for inspiration.

2. Research Meanings of Tattoo Designs--- (you might be surprised!)

Just as astrological signs and other symbols have special meanings, tattoo designs indicate the type of person you are, your aspirations, your religious beliefs, and what life means to you.

For this reason, you need to research tattoo designs’ meanings.

Many tattoo designs can have dual (positive and negative meanings) and you need to be sure that no one will ever look at your tattoo and misunderstand the person you are.

3. Where is the Tattoo Design Going?

Make no mistake: every person has a particular pain threshold and there are certain areas of the body that are more sensitive than others for the placement of a tattoo design.

While many describe the feeling of getting a tattoo like “being stung by a bunch of little bees,” the tattoo design application can be uncomfortable on certain areas of the body.

In addition to this, the appearance and placement of a tattoo design may or may not be suitable for the workplace. If tattoos are not allowed to be seen during working hours, consider placement of the tattoo design such that it can be covered up easily.

4. Tattoo Design Color(s)

According to the tattoo design, more or less color will be used.

Some tattoo enthusiasts say that the application of the color is ‘worse’ than the “little bee stings”---it can actually sting a bit. Obviously, the more color a tattoo design has, the more ‘stinging’ you may experience during its application on your skin.

In addition, you need to think about situations where the tattoo will be seen and how with clothing.

For example, if you are a woman attending a formal event and are wearing a see-through blouse or backless dress, the tattoo may be seen by EVERYONE---and you may not want that. A tattoo design that has less color will not be as apparent.

5. Large or Small Tattoo Design?

Of course, the larger the tattoo design, the more time it will take to apply and the more costly it will be.

When looking at tattoo art or tattoo flash on- or offline, you may want to consider how the tattoo design elements can be reduced down while still saying who you are.

For example, explain to a tattoo artist what elements you would like. Although you may pay a bit more for a custom tattoo design, it will well be worth it in the future and you might break even on cost if the design is smaller.

6. Ask for Referrals from Friends and Family

For starters, a rule of thumb is the ‘cheaper the tattoo artist, the cheaper the tattoo design will look’.

Many tattoo artists are out there who may charge less for tattoo designs and applications because they are less experienced or apprentices in the field.

Especially if this is your first time getting a tattoo, do ask for referrals from friends, family, and through online tattoo forums.

7. Take the Time to Find the Right Tattoo Design

Don’t rush out on a whim to the nearest tattoo parlour to get tattooed.

Think about the reasons you want a tattoo and avoid getting one because friends have one; chances are, trendy tattoo designs will age you down the line. If you got a tattoo design of a peace sign in the 70’s, it could look pretty silly in 2010 and clearly state how old you are.

Take the time to research your tattoo design to make sure it expresses who you are now---and will be forever.
